Author: Ruth D.L.
Purpose: To engage students in
debate/conversation about current events while developing critical thinking and
speaking skills and then writing a summary or response in regards to discussed
topic.
Audience/Level: High School Level 9-12 grade
In summary, the objective of this activity is to
create an atmosphere which ESL students feel at liberty to form their own ideas
and opinions as well as learning not only from the material but from each
other. The teacher would provide a prompt regarding a current issue or topic
and then allow students to engage in a class discussion. After each student has
reached their own stance and/or opinion they would then be instructed to
elaborate on paper using appropriate grammar and form.
Prompt Example:
●
What is your stance on the Dreamer
walkout held at UTRGV last week?
